Choose Your Priorities: 7 Powerful Steps to Focus in 2027

Knowing how to choose your priorities is the difference between a busy year and a meaningful one. Every December we write a long list of things we want to do, and by February most of that list is forgotten. The problem isn’t a lack of discipline. It’s that we tried to say yes to everything at once. 🌿

choose your priorities

Welcome to Day 4 of the New Year Prep series. You’ve reviewed your wins and lessons, and you’ve decided what to leave behind. Now you have space, so today you’ll choose your priorities for 2027: just three of them. In this guide, you’ll learn a simple 7-step process to choose your priorities clearly and without overwhelm.

New here? Catch up with Day 2: Wins and Lessons of the Year and Day 3: What to Leave Behind in the New Year, because today builds directly on both.

🌟 Why You Should Choose Your Priorities (and Only Three)

Your time, energy and money are limited. When you spread them across ten goals, each one gets a thin slice and none of them moves much. When you choose your priorities carefully, each one gets real attention.

The Pareto principle, often called the 80/20 rule, suggests that a small share of your efforts creates most of your results. You can read more in this overview of the Pareto principle. It’s a rule of thumb, not a law, but it’s a helpful reminder that a few right things beat many random things.

Why three? Because three is easy to remember, easy to review and small enough to protect. You can still have other goals. They just don’t get top billing.

📚 Step 1: Gather Your Notes

Open everything you’ve written so far in this series: your reset answers, your wins and lessons, and your list of what you’re leaving behind. Highlight anything that appears more than once. Repeated themes are signals. If “I need more rest” shows up in three places, it deserves a serious look.

🧠 Step 2: Brain-Dump Everything You Want

Set a timer for 10 minutes and write every goal, wish and idea you have for 2027. Don’t edit yourself. Use five areas to help you remember everything:

  • Money: saving, debt, income, investing
  • Health: movement, sleep, food
  • Relationships: family, friends, community
  • Work or business: career, skills, projects
  • Mindset: learning, peace, hobbies

Aim for at least 15 items. This is the messy part, and it’s supposed to be.

🔎 Step 3: Run the Four-Question Filter

Now test each item with four questions:

  1. Does this matter to me, or only to impress others?
  2. Will it still matter a year from now?
  3. Do I have the time and energy for it right now?
  4. Would it make other things easier or unnecessary?

Give each item one point per “yes.” Items with three or four points are your finalists. The rest aren’t bad ideas. They simply aren’t priorities this year.

✂️ Step 4: Narrow Down to Three

Look at your finalists and ask: “If I could only achieve three things in 2027 and feel proud, what would they be?” Try to pick from different areas so your life stays balanced, or choose three that support one bigger theme.

Write your three priorities at the top of a clean page. Then move everything else to a Later List. It isn’t deleted. It’s simply waiting its turn. That makes it much easier to let go of the guilt.

🎯 Step 5: Make Each Priority Specific

A vague priority is a wish. A specific one is a plan. For each of your three, write the outcome, why it matters and one small action for this week. Here is how to turn vague into clear:

Vague prioritySpecific priority
Get healthierWalk 30 minutes, five days a week
Save more moneyBuild a three-month emergency fund by December
Grow my side businessLaunch one digital product by June

Specific priorities are also easier to measure, which means you’ll know when you’ve actually won.

🛡️ Step 6: Protect Your Priorities

Choosing is the easy part. Protecting your priorities is where most people struggle. Try these simple habits:

  • Block time: put one priority session in your calendar each week.
  • Do it first: give your best energy hour to your top priority.
  • Use a polite no: “That sounds lovely, but I’m focusing on other things this year.”
  • Keep a parking lot: write new ideas on your Later List instead of starting them.

📅 Step 7: Set a Monthly Check-In

Choose one day each month, such as the first Sunday, for a 15-minute review. Ask: What moved forward? What got in the way? What do I adjust? Priorities aren’t set in stone. If life changes, you can change one, but do it on purpose, not by drifting.

❓ Choose Your Priorities: Frequently Asked Questions

Why only three priorities?
Three is large enough to cover what matters and small enough to remember and protect. If you have more, spread them over seasons, not all at once.

What if all my goals feel equally important?
Ask which one, if done, would make the others easier. That one usually goes first.

Can I change my priorities mid-year?
Yes. Use your monthly check-in to decide on purpose. Change is fine. Drifting is the problem.

What if I don’t achieve my priorities?
Look at what got in the way instead of blaming yourself. Often the goal was too vague, or the time was never protected.

🌿 Final Thoughts

When you choose your priorities with care, you stop living in reaction mode and start living on purpose. You can’t do everything, but you can do the right few things well.
